Vistry Group shines spotlight on apprentices for National Apprenticeship Week

Vistry Group is celebrating National Apprenticeship Week by shining a spotlight on the housebuilder’s apprentices across the country.

Vistry CEO Greg Fitzgerald swapped hotel pot washing for a construction apprenticeship kick-starting nearly 40 years in the industry and said apprentices were vital for the future.

On Wednesday (9/2), Vistry will have a virtual stand at the National Apprenticeship Show, highlighting its opportunities and outlining what the industry has to offer to future talent.

Vistry apprentices carving out an exciting career include planning apprentice Lyle Seaton-Collins, from Dawlish, and apprentice plumber, Archie Kilminster, from Gloucester.

Lyle, 23, spent two years in retail in a graduate role after completing his business degree at the University of Plymouth but had enjoyed a brief period of time working with a planning consultant so jumped at the opportunity when he saw Vistry’s apprenticeship advertised.

His course is expected to take two years and will involve studying at the University College of Estate Management. Once his apprenticeship is completed, he will be a qualified chartered surveyor with a post-graduate master’s degree.

Lyle said: “I’m delighted to have discovered this opportunity with Vistry. I feel fortunate as the company is funding my course, plus the scheme is flexible so it enables me to work, earn money and gain experience, while studying and obtaining qualifications.

“I spend four days working and one day studying, which is done online and can fit around meetings and appointments, so I couldn’t be happier. I feel like I have a clear career path ahead of me and it’s exciting to know where I’m heading.”

Archie joined Vistry last September after a long search for a job in plumbing. Currently based at Vistry’s Twigworth Green in Gloucester – which includes the housebuilder’s Bovis Homes and Linden Homes brands – he is undertaking a Level 3 qualification in domestic plumbing and heating.

The 21-year-old said: “I enjoyed my previous jobs, but it was always plumbing that I could see myself doing. I’ve had a great experience with Vistry so far – I would definitely say it’s the best company I’ve worked for.

“There is a fantastic sense of teamwork here at Twigworth Green. I’m always learning new things, and it’s been a pleasure to watch all the different team members work together. Their dedication inspires me to continue to ensure my work is perfect every time – we’re always striving for perfection.”

Archie, who currently attends Gloucestershire College every Wednesday as part of his apprenticeship, is due to complete his Level 3 course in September 2025.

CEO Greg Fitzgerald began his career in construction with a four-year estimator apprenticeship and said the knowledge he gained set him up for a long-term career in housebuilding.

He said: “It’s young people and apprentices who can really make a difference to workplaces, bringing extra energy and longevity. We are selling, buying land and building well and we see apprentices having a massive part to play in our sector – there should be plenty of opportunities for them.”

The National Apprenticeship Show includes video links, downloads and a live chat function for virtual attendees who will be able to find more information on Vistry and career vacancies.
