Rugby League star Keegan Hirst supporting allyship

As part of Pride Month celebrations, Vistry’s LGBTQ+ network hosted a guest appearance by Keegan Hirst, the first British professional Rugby League player to come out as gay.

The network focuses on raising awareness and promoting support for LGBTQ+ colleagues across the Vistry business and Keegan’s presentation was broadcast live to the group.

Keegan talked about his successful career as a sportsman which was marred up until 2015 by the fact he was denying his true self which led to severe mental ill health. He stressed how vital it was that non-members of the LGBTQ+ community and, indeed, companies like Vistry support their colleagues, by creating safe spaces and by checking in on friends who might be struggling.

Keegan, who played for teams such as Dewsbury Rams, Batley Bulldogs and Halifax, told the group: "I used to be a joiner and I did that for six years, working on site. If you’re not LGBTQ you have a massive role to play, in helping to create a culture of inclusivity and allowing people to just be themselves”.
Keegan concluded by saying: “Celebrating different, celebrating authenticity.”

Vistry support and encourage colleagues throughout the year to be who they are, whatever their background. Throughout Pride month, Vistry has organised activities aimed to educate, spark conversations and allow colleagues to open up about their identities.
