Update: City Gateway, Bristol

Bristol City Council has amended its diversion route, following feedback from the public and other stakeholders. Please click here (Festival way Footpath closure (2)) to see the new diversion routes for cyclists and pedestrians to use during the cycle path closure.

Vistry Group is working to transform the former industrial, brownfield site into a high-quality new place to live, with a significant number of affordable homes for Bristolians. The new City Gateway development is being built on the old Ashton Rail Yard and will feature 220 new homes, including 98 designated affordable properties. Once complete, it will play an important role in the wider Western Harbour regeneration area.

Work is well under way, however a section of cycle route 33 – adjacent to the allotments near Bedminster Cricket Club – has been closed to facilitate infrastructure works and a new cycle route will be delivered as part of the project.

Consultations with Bristol City Council, Sustrans and Hotwells and District Allotment Association have taken place to minimise the disruption and a diversion has been put in place to ensure cyclists and pedestrians can continue their journey safely.

When did the cycle route close?
The cycleway closed on Tuesday 28th May at 7.30am

When will the cycle route re-open?
The cycle route is due to re-open on 28th Jan 2025. However, the site team will be working hard to re-open the cycle way sooner, if possible.

The cycle route will be re-opened temporarily for Bristol Balloon Fiesta from Friday 9th August at 8am until Monday 12th August at 8am

What part of the cycle route has closed?
A section of cycle route 33 will be closed near the Brunel Way flyover, adjacent to the allotments near Bedminster Cricket Club. Please see the map that indicates which section has closed and the diversions that are in place.

Is there a diversion in place?
Yes, the closure has been approved by Bristol City Council and both BCC and Sustrans have approved the diversion route, which ensures cyclists and pedestrians can continue their journey safely. Please see the map which indicates which section is closed and the diversions that are in place.

Why did the cycle route need to close?
The cycle route needed to close to facilitate essential infrastructure works at Vistry’s City Gateway development in Bristol. A new cycle route will be delivered as part of the project, including benches and enhanced landscaping.

What is the timeline of works?
•    The cycle route closed on 28th May
•    The first phase will involve the removal of the palisade fencing and concrete platforms. The tarmac will be stripped and filling to the underside formation level will take place
•    The second stage groundworks are due to start week commencing 24th June

Will you be providing updates on the work?
•    Yes, diversion signage is in place and a QR code has been created to provide a map of the diversion route and the latest information
•    Access to the allotments next to the site will remain open, however there will be a couple of times when vehicular access is not possible. We will continue to liaise with the chair of the allotment association to minimise the disruption and will provide as much notice as possible

We apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience during these essential works.
